MyChar.Cards / Legal
Privacy Policy
Last updated:
MyChar.Cards is a browser-based character card editor operated by Michael Crawford, an individual based in the United States. This policy explains what happens to information when you use MyChar.Cards, its features (such as the editor), or contact me.
Your cards and browser storage
The editor processes the cards and files you create or import in your browser. It does not upload your complete cards or images to me or store them on the MyChar.Cards server. You can download a card or copy its JSON; what you do with those copies is up to you.
- Card data is saved automatically in your browser's storage. It can include card text, configuration, a provided avatar, embedded or linked assets, the card version, save or update times, and any other data that you choose to import or provide.
- Basic site settings, such as your theme choice and JSON panel width, may be saved in your browser's storage. The site does not use cookies to save your draft or these settings.
- Your browser may cache the app's files using a service worker to support offline use and updates. The policy pages can also be available offline once cached.
Local data can remain until you replace or clear it, your browser removes it, a private browsing session ends, or any other mechanism or event that causes the browser to clear storage. Clearing site data for mychar.cards in your browser removes card data and settings that were stored in the browser. It does not delete downloaded files, clipboard contents, or copies stored elsewhere. Browser storage can fail or be cleared unexpectedly, so keep your own backups.
External resources
The card editor automatically checks and previews external asset URLs, including URLs in an imported or restored card. A creator notes preview can also load resources referenced in its Markdown or HTML. The server hosting a resource may receive your IP address, the requested URL and its parameters, and other browser or network information. It may also receive or set cookies depending on your browser and its settings. I do not control how external resource providers handle information they receive.
Those resources are controlled by their own providers and policies. Information you put in a URL can be sent to its host, including MyChar.Cards' host if the URL points to this domain. Avoid putting private information or secrets in resource URLs.
Hosting and site traffic
MyChar.Cards is hosted by DreamHost. When your browser or device requests the site, DreamHost may record information such as your IP address, requested URL, date and time, browser information, referring page, error or response details, and other available data. I may use hosting logs or built-in statistics to operate and secure the site, troubleshoot problems, and understand site traffic. The site currently has no separate analytics or error-reporting service integrated into it.
DreamHost says HTTP logs, as of the writing of this policy, are kept for seven days by default. This is a provider default, not a guarantee: actual retention can differ or change without notice, and other provider-managed records or statistics may have different retention periods. If I save copies of logs or statistics containing personal information, I keep them only for as long as needed to investigate technical or security issues or meet legal obligations. I periodically review those copies and delete them when they are no longer needed.
Messages and sharing
If you email me, I receive your email address, your message, and any other information included in or with your email. Messages are forwarded to me and processed by the email providers involved, including DreamHost. I keep messages for as long as needed to respond to your inquiry, handle related follow-up, resolve disputes, or meet legal obligations. I periodically review retained messages and delete those that are no longer needed. There is no fixed retention period for every message.
I do not sell personal information or share it for targeted advertising. DreamHost and email providers process information to provide their services. Providers and third-party resources may use cookies or similar technologies under their own practices. You can manage cookies and site data in your browser settings.
I may disclose information available to me when required by applicable law or valid, binding legal process, such as a court order. I cannot provide card data that exists only in your browser and has not been sent to me.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live and applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of personal information, object to or restrict certain processing, and complain to a privacy regulator. Contact me using the address below to make a request. I may need information to verify your request or find the relevant records, and legal exceptions may apply. I cannot access or delete a card (or any other information) that exists only in your browser; use your browser's controls for that.
Where European Economic Area (EEA) or United Kingdom (UK) data protection law applies, I rely on my legitimate interests in operating and securing the site, understanding traffic, and responding to messages, except where those interests are overridden by your rights and interests. I may also process information when necessary to comply with legal obligations.
I am based in the United States. Information sent to hosting, email, or other providers may be processed in the United States or other countries where those providers operate.
Children
MyChar.Cards is not intended for children under 13. Users who are minors need a parent or legal guardian's permission to use MyChar.Cards. Only users 18 or older may create, import, edit, or export cards containing sexually explicit content or graphic violence. The Terms of Service prohibit sexualization of minors and certain abusive depictions of minors for all users. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to me, please contact me.
Changes and contact
I may update this policy by posting a revised version here with a new date. Unless applicable law requires additional notice or consent, posting the revised policy here is the only notice provided. Where additional notice or consent is required, I will provide that notice or obtain that consent.
